Forensics: Cognitive bias in forensic pathology decisions – Journal of Forensic Sciences

This study determined a group of National Association of Medical Examiner pathologists have a predilection to determine death of black children 5x more likely as homicide compared to dead white kids. NAME also takes the position that the ABFO bitemarker group should be the only odontologists hired for dental identification. They ding their accredited ME/Coroner membership for non-compliance. Both biases are unacceptable..

In a 2017 study, similar research of ME attitudes revealed strong feelings of infallibility, a resistance to blind-testing of theories, and deniability of personal bias. The paper applied phrase “bias blind spot” which the MEs acknowledge bias in others but not themselves.

Cognitive bias and blindness: A global survey of forensic science examiners.

Ouch.

Forensics: Sentenced to death, but innocent: These are stories of justice gone wrong. National Geographic @The_AAFS

In depth discussion and interviews. Includes Ray Krone who was put on death row by AAFS/ABFO bite dentist, Ray Rawson. The DA in his case spent $50K for the dental expert. The defense got $1500. Ray’s family petitioned the ABFO to review Rawson’s opinion. The ABFO refused. Rawson was a past ABFO president.

Since 1973, more than 8,700 people in the U.S. have been sent to death row. At least 182 weren’t guilty—their lives upended by a system that nearly killed them.

Forensics: Covid deniers in Florida. Authorities: Men posed as US marshals to avoid wearing masks

Stupid seems to run in this family.

Investigators learned the men had never been employed as U.S. marshals or by the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service.

Forensics: Bitemark believer at the #AAFS2021 online conference carries on the myth.

Reading Richard Souviron always leaves me confused. What the heck. Is he saying bitemark patterns are still reliable means to direct the police investigations? I think so. What’s the error rate regarding your personal selection from your personal casework? 100%? Oops, you can’t use percentages anymore. How’s this: reasonable medical certainty? Too vague and misleading? You have any research? Nope. Do dentists reliably identify the presence of bitemarks? Not really.

So why are you promoting this? Self-citation not withstanding.

Id love to know. Here is his 2021 abstract.

Forensics: Police violence against children. Black girls are often treated like adults during police encounters, experts say. Rochester is just one example

Unacceptable violence against children of color by police. White girls get much more deference than Black girls.

Rochester police had handcuffed a 9-year-old Black girl and put her in the back of a police car last month when an officer made a striking statement: “You’re acting like a child.”

Forensics: Footprints can tell about the body size-A research to be presented in the American Academy of Forensic Sciences Conference

Conclusion: Fatter means larger, thinner means smaller. Am I missing something?

CHANDIGARH: A research conducted by Dr. Kewal Krishan, Associate Professor and former Chairperson of the Department of Anthropology, Panjab University, Chandigarh and his student Dr. Richa Mukhra has shown that the footprints may give clues about the body size of the person who created these.
