Police in NYC collect DNA from citizens, the ME runs the DNA lab. This battle is ongoing. Over 30K samples exist in their database.

An anonymous group of forensic scientists in the city Medical Examiner’s office fired off an email to the City Council in hope of curbing the NYPD’s practice of collecting DNA from people not charged with crimes.
